Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement

In preparation for the PrefCore NIHR RfPB grant application (Quantifying and implementing patient preferences for the treatment of high-risk rectal cancer, including the new strategy of organ preservation), we undertook the following with our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement group:

We asked 24 individuals in our PPIE group their willingness to partake in a randomised trial of W&W versus surgery in the setting of cCR. We received three groups of replies: a third said definitely ‘no’; a third said ‘yes’, commenting that entering trials is a positive encounter; and a third said ‘yes’, commenting that they wanted to be offered W&W. We worried that if these individuals were randomised to surgery, they would drop out.
